The Great Gatsby is a book written by F. Scott Fitzgerald, it is the story of incredibly filthy rich Jay Gatsby, the story is narrated by Nick Carraway who is Gatsby’s neighbour. Nick is a guy from the midwest who settled in New York to achieve the American dream, he lives in Long Island but his work is in Manhattan. Gatsby’s incredibly big mansion is the opposite from Nick’s modest house, Nick is really curious about his new neighbour after he was invited to one of Gatsby’s extremely luxurious parties. Soon he is invited to meet Gatsby and he realises that Gatsby is crazily in love with Daisy Buchanan who is Nick’s cousin, Her husband a brilliant man from Yale university named Tom Buchanan who was really rich too. One day Nick is invited by Tom to a the city where he finds out that Tom has another woman who is named Myrtle, her husband is a Long Island mechanic. Later on Gatsby starts planning a meeting with Daisy with Nick’s help and the golfer Jordan Baker, Nick learns that Jay Gatsby was once in love with Daisy, but unfortunately Daisy had married Tom while Jay was in Europe during the Great War. After that happened Jay Gatsby abandoned his old identity and became who he was amassing an extravagant fortune with the help of a well known criminal Meyer Wolfsheim, Gatsby bought his mansion in that part of Long Island just because Daisy lived across the lake. Nick finally manages to get the “date” between his cousin and Gatsby, then Gatsby takes Nick and Daisy back to his mansion where he has a good time with Daisy and with his friend. After this meeting Gatsby and Daisy start to see each other secretly a lot. Nick and Gatsby start to become great friends because Nick always supported Gatsby and never believed in any rumor that circulated around his friend. One day Gatsby confronts Tom in Manhattan where they argue about who Daisy loved the most, Daisy says she loves both of them, after this “fight” Daisy and Gatsby return to Long Island just the two of them, Gatsby makes a horrible decision by letting drive Daisy having in mind she was having emotional problems. Daisy kills a woman in her way to Long Island and she just speeds off the crime scene, the woman happened to be Myrtle who thought Buchanan had went to visit her. Myrtle’s husbands thought Buchanan had killed his wife so he went to him. Buchanan informed him that Gatsby was the responsable for his wife’s death, the mechanic decides to go to Gatsby’s mansion and he ended up killing Gatsby for something he did not do, then the mechanic killed himself. Daisy says she did not do anything, and the day of Gatsby’s funeral only few people attended Nick and Gatsby’s father.
My opinion about this book is awesome, I think is totally worth to reading because of the themes, drama in this book takes a really important place I think in the way that when Gatsby was alive he was such an important and well known man, he was pretty much loved by everyone but when he died really few people showed up to his funeral not even Daisy attended. Romance is really important too, I thought of this book differently just because it had romance but is kind of an indirect romance I liked the book mainly because of Gatsby’s wealth, it was curious how he made all of his money and how he spent it.
